Types of Openers
You may wonder what kind of garage door openers are currently on the market. Here is a rundown.
- Chain-driven opener: This is similar to a bicycle chain and it carries a trolley that is connected to the garage door. This is pretty noisy and needs to be taken into consideration if your garage is attached to your house.
- Belt-driven opener: Like the chain opener, but instead of a chain, it uses a belt to move the trolley. They are just quieter than the chain.
- Jackshaft opener: This mounts on the inside of the garage on the wall next to the door. It uses pulleys and cables that move the torsion bar to raise the garage door, powered by a 24 volt DC motor.
- Direct-drive units: These have only one moving part, which is the motor itself and are often claimed to be the quietest openers of the garage door units. The motor itself moves along a stationary chain which is inserted in an above rail.
DC-Powered Openers
As opposed to the AC motors, DC motors are known to have a smoother operation, moving quieter, faster, and more efficiently. They often have a variable speed, which will allow for soft-start/soft-spot technology. These garage door openers also can have a backup battery system, meaning they will still function when the power is out. In the newest type of unit, the battery is actually part of the opener motor. If the power does go out, the opener usually will still work for up to 48 hours, depending on the frequency you use it while the power is out. The backup battery will give you even more time and let you use your security system, the garage lighting, and other functions. It is true that the DC motors that have brushes do not have the same longevity as the AC motors, but they do make a brushless DC motor that can compete with the life expectancy of the AC motor.
